Job Overview
Location: Peterborough, Ontario
Structure: Detached two-storey house with brick exterior
Problem: Active mice inside the home, including wall and attic activity
Service: Mouse treatment and exterior exclusion
Visits: Three
Summary
We responded to reports of ongoing mouse activity inside a detached brick home. Over three visits, our team completed licensed mouse treatment followed by a comprehensive exterior exclusion to address multiple entry points identified during inspection. Activity was brought under control, and the structure was sealed to prevent re-entry.
Background / Property Context
The home is a two-storey detached structure with yellow brick cladding, soffits, roofline transitions, and multiple exterior utility penetrations. These features are common access points for mice when small construction gaps are present.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported live mice activity in the attic and persistent scratching sounds within wall cavities, indicating an active interior infestation.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial inspection, we observed several exterior vulnerabilities consistent with rodent entry:
- Open and unprotected weep vents along the foundation
- Gaps at soffit-to-wall transitions
- Openings around utility line penetrations
- A continuous gap surrounding the electric meter installation
Interior inspection confirmed mouse activity in the attic space.
Photos provided show examples of open foundation gaps, soffit junctions, wall penetrations, and utility areas prior to sealing, as well as completed mesh and sealing work at select locations.
Cause Analysis
Mice are able to enter structures through openings as small as a few centimetres. In this case, multiple unsealed construction gaps along the exterior envelope provided easy access points. The combination of foundation-level openings and overhead soffit gaps allowed mice to move between wall cavities and the attic.
Treatment / Removal
Mouse treatment was completed by a licensed exterminator in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines.
Tamper-resistant bait stations were installed in areas of confirmed activity both inside the home and around the exterior perimeter. Feeding levels were monitored and rebaited as required on follow-up.
Exclusion & Repairs
Following customer approval, full exterior exclusion work was completed, including:
- Installation of 43 stainless steel vented inserts to secure weep vents
- Sealing of one utility line opening using galvanized steel mesh and exterior-grade sealant
- Sealing of approximately 4.5 feet around the electric meter with galvanized steel mesh and sealant
- Sealing of 117 linear feet of soffit-to-wall gaps using galvanized steel and exterior caulking
All materials were installed flush to existing surfaces to maintain airflow where required while preventing rodent access.
Outcome & Confirmation
After treatment and exclusion were completed, no further mouse activity was reported. Feeding pressure decreased on follow-up, and all identified exterior entry points were secured. The home was left sealed against rodent re-entry.
Technician Notes
Grant completed the inspection, treatment, and exclusion work across all visits. No access limitations were encountered during service, allowing for full perimeter sealing and follow-up monitoring.
